I think the old London & Brighton is being squatted. Now that planning permission for yet another block of cheap flats has been refused, they might be there for a while
The Spike is a community garden/rehearsal space/arts centre that was set up in what remains of the notorious workhouse (Orwell stayed there) that backed onto the railway tracks. It’s a very nice space, and the council has decided to charge them an astronomical rent…
If you’re interested, here’s a Livesey update.
The Friends’ proposal to get Novas Scarman to run the place as a community centre was rejected by the council. However, the council had the bright idea of asking Theatre Peckham to come up with a bid to run the building as a rehearsal/administration space. And TP’s bid won.
As far as I can tell, this wasn’t too popular with the Friends. But I know Theatre Peckham fairly well: they’re an excellent community theatre group that runs dozens of evening and weekend performing arts courses and workshops for children of all ages. I think the Livesey would make a good HQ where they could run classes, have rehearsal and dance studios and store all their equipment. It would still be a community resource, and may even be more popular than the museum.
