Sad news. Dennis Irwin, the incredibly talented bass player, died on 10 March. Our thoughts are with him and his family, especially his brother (and my online mate) Dave.
Dennis did not have health insurance, and his case became something of a rallying point for American jazz musicians who cannot afford health insurance. Making a living in the jazz world is hard – even for established and well-respected sidemen like Dennis, and health insurance is often a luxury or something they’ll get around to some day.
Plans have been announced to create a memorial fund to help other American jazz musicians who find themselves in a similar situation to Dennis. It’s good to know that Dennis will continue to do good even after he has gone.
